How to Get Baby to Take a Bottle

Even if you're planning to exclusively breastfeed, there will likely come a time when you'll need your baby to take a bottle. A baby care expert suggests introducing a bottle once breastfeeding is well-established, typically around one month. This isn't just for emergencies; it can also offer breastfeeding mothers a much-needed break.

While some babies take to a bottle easily due to their natural sucking reflex, others, especially breastfed babies, might be more hesitant. It's common for breastfed babies who initially accepted a bottle at one month to refuse it by three or four months if it hasn't been offered regularly. But don't worry, bottle resistance is common, and there are proven tips to help:

Tips for Bottle-Feeding a Breastfed Baby

  • Offer often: Even if you're primarily breastfeeding, aim to give your baby at least one bottle a week once breastfeeding is established. This helps make it part of their routine, reducing resistance.
  • Don't wait until baby is starving: Try offering the bottle between nursing sessions when your baby is calm and not overly hungry. If they're too hungry, they might be too distressed to accept it.
  • Let others try: Sometimes, a baby will take a bottle more readily from someone other than their mother. Have your partner or another caregiver try feeding the baby, ideally when you're not in the room. Again, choose a time that isn't their "must-feed" moment.
  • Don't get frustrated: If your baby is refusing the bottle, put it down and try again later. Forcing it can lead to frustration for both of you.
  • Ask for help: A lactation consultant can provide personalized techniques for even the most resistant bottle-feeders. They can check for any latch problems, recommend suitable bottles, troubleshoot behavioral issues, or suggest alternative feeding methods like cup or syringe feeding.
